Button badges are back
For many of those who grew up in the sixties, seventies or even the eighties it's a surprise to see old fashions coming back around again. Flared jeans had a second turn as popular fashion clothing a few years ago, and now stovepipe and skinny jeans are doing the same. The emo kids of today have revived some of the fashions of our youth, and while there are notable differences between what was popular then and what's the in thing now, there are certainly clothes being worn on the British high street today that look very familiar indeed. Who could have predicted that Adam Ant-style jackets would come back into style? Most of us never thought we'd see the like again, at least outside of old movies and photo albums.
One fashion accessory that has made the revival is the badge. Button badges, once worn by every student politico in the 80s and beloved by punks and mods alike, are back with a vengeance. Rock bands have been quick to recognise the fact and the badge stalls that used to be found at live gigs in the late 70s and 80s are now creeping back into music venues and festivals. In student politics these little statements have never really gone away, but it's now becoming cool to wear badges again whether they be political or not.
Boutique high street shops have not been slow off the mark either. Most of the more alternative clothing stores now sell badges alongside their other fashion accessories. The smart ones are also using custom made badges to promote their own business.
Button badges are now, as they were then, the perfect way of expressing any idea or concept. They are the e.asiest and cheapest way of displaying your musical taste, political inclinations, or anything you like or don't like- products, slogans, or just little pieces of humour or even art, and they are definitely back in style .
